My friend gave me a bible with a message written on it. . .What should I do with it?

I AM NOT CHRISTIAN. I hesitate to keep the bible. No one around me wants it so far...

Report as

You should read it.

Donate it to your local library. If there's not a way to remove the page the message is on, you never know, someone else might find it inspirational.

Your friend is trying to help you. She is Christian and that is the best thing she feels is right, and I believe so too. Just keep the bible, it's a reminder from your friend that she cares about you. Whatever the message was, it obviously meant something important. Whatever you do, don't make it a conversation unless SHE brings it up. Even then, keep the conversation low key. In most cases, people are offended if someone else doesn't believe that same thing they do, so try not to talk about it with her or anyone else.

Nobody said you had to read it, if its got a personal message written in it then keep it as a memento of your friendship. If you get rid of it you'll be kicking yourself years from now.

Read it, I'm christian though even if your not it's still interesting. That's the same reason I read other religious texts. It's a part of history, and also it lets you get into the mind of others.

Even Patton Oswalt, a strong atheist and comedian said the Bible was a very interesting read.

read it or don't read it - it doesn't matter, but if you think highly of your friend you might want to keep it or keep the message.

Curious what the message was. You say it was a friend that gave you it. A friend ought to know you so well that it might be a tricky thing for you to receive. You could put it aside "for later", you never know. After all, we constantly continue to evolve.

Idea: you could give him something back that would equal the gesture, though I'm not sure what.

Comments anybody, on how this person can answer in kind?

A copy of a Richard Dawkins book would be about as appropriate. I wouldn't recommend it, though.

Wow bamcintyre.. sounds like you're the one messed up. Satin does work among us 24/7/365 days a year. And your comments represent that he is good at his job. In short his job is to make humans not read or follow the teachings of our Lord and God Jesus. Being a Christian doesn't make you perfect. Even Christians commit sin. Why? Because we have a soul that inhabits in sinful flesh. The difference between a Christian and a Non Christian isn't that they a sinless, it's that we have recognized the fact that we are all sinners and have repented of our sins. And accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as our savior. I would encourage all to read the bible and go to a real bible reading and teaching church. Be Careful there are many churches that do not represent God. That would be one of Satan's great deceptions. What you believe will matter when your body is dead and your spirit lives on. Where will YOUR spirit live heaven or hell that is your choice.

according to scriptures you can believe all you want and still go to hell, especially for hypocrisy,Christ himself despised this. It's a fine line, and very few enter the kingdom of god.

"Jesus replied, “I assure you: Unless someone is born again,[a] he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

"But how can anyone be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked Him. “Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?”

Jesus answered, “I assure you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” "

Its a book. Keep it on your book shelf as a reference. Its not like its going to bite you or poison you or something for goodness sake. What are you afraid of? Get a grip. Im a christian but i have an electronic copy of the Quran. So far my devices havent caught fire or blown up because of that. Relax and try not to be so silly. It may come in handy some day in the future and it WAS a gift. Itd be rude to toss it.

The Bible is the word of God. It is a very precious thing. First of all, treasure it and be grateful that God has brought this into your possession. Second pray for wisdom. Ask God why he has brought this into your possession and what he wants you to learn from. Then open the Bible, read it, and be prepared to have your life change drastically for the better. Be prepared to come to know the one and only true and living God who created everything in just six days, and who made you in His own image.

"Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him." Proverbs 19:4

Just some friendly advice from the bible. There is truth in it and you might find it useful and maybe inspiring someday. Would you have even known that sentence was from the bible if I hadn't put the book and verse?

the bible is about Jesus Christ who died so that you may live with him forever! He is the gift that you have received within that book' Your choice to know him or ignore him, but the reason why your in this predicament right now is because he loves you and wants you to come to know him. Bless you and hope you make that choice.

You would be a horrible friend to give away a gift that your friend gave to you. You don't have to read it, but you should keep it. Put it on display or something.

Keep it or give it away? Once something is personalized, it's got limited appeal to others. I guess he wanted you to have a Bible. If its not of interest to you (I started with the book of John), I would return it to him. He may be disappointed but that's the best way to be clear.

I'm happy to offer a laugh waycup :) I do understand the bible though, its a war doctrine against unbelievers.
Report as
Its instructions to own slaves as well also for causing general carnage.

Okay, get specific, no excuses... Education.

If you insist.

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Its an instruction to kill people who don't listen to priests, I've got pages of more atrocities from the bible but this is the one I randomly landed on.
Report as
Okay. I'm prepared to address them alll individually.

Before we get started though, for the sake of this discussion, can you put aside your disbelief and accept, for the time being, that the Jews are Gods chosen people? This is important for proper understanding when talking about the OT and Mosaic law.
Report as
For the sake of argument, I could do that BUT I see no need for to accept that the Jews are gods chosen people, I'd first need evidence of gods and namely the god of abraham. Now for a minute, I'm willing to imagine god is real and that he has chosen the jews but my generosity is limited and I will just let you know that up front.
On a side note, I don't think that point is relevant nor is the presupposition of any deities.
Please take note that the topic objected to was the instructions in the bible that are morally reprehensible.
Report as
In its context, this passage is speaking of cases between Jews that were deemed too difficult for them to resolve amongst themselves, and as such they must have been serious matters. When these cases would arise they were to present the them before the Levite priests, who were priests of the Most High. They worked directly with God, and when they took on a difficult case they would consult the Almighty for righteous judgement.

The judgement they handed down was, and was considered, the judgement of God. As such, it was His command and was not to be questioned. Acting against this righteous judgement was acting against and challenging the judgement of God Himself, which was evil in His sight. It was a sin, and all sin is equal in the eyes of The Lord. All sin is worthy of death if you were to ask Him, because sin is wickedness, and wickedness is evil, and God detests evil. So, the penalty was appropriate.

One other thing, because I know this will seem severe to you, but the law was also given to show the Jews that they could never do what was right before God. God imposed DEATH as the penalty for breaking the law, and yet even when faced with this terrible consequence man could not stop himself from sinning.
Report as
Also, this law applied only to the Jewish people, and is not for the gentile, neither are we bound to its consequences. God desired to make a righteous people out of the Jews, they were held to high standards, and the penalties were severe to keep them safe from themselves.

I'm sure you have some rebuttals, so I'll stop there, but there is much that must be considered really, in order to FULLY understand.
Report as
Aside from the reality that people throughout history have used this on non-jews to execute them for non-crimes, this is treason, forcible subversion of government, murder, hate crime and conspiracy to commit murder. It doesn't matter what race or religion jews are, they deserve the same human rights as everyone else.
I think its important to note that none of these instructions need to be in context to inspire serial mass murderers. Hitler was not leaping when he ordered the execution of the jews. He could have grabbed any arbitrary scripture from Duet or lev and accused the jews of it to enact the holocaust.
Report as
Okay. Do you have a response, something to object to the defense given as it relates to the passage at hand? Or are we to move on to another passage so quickly?
Report as
Well I think I've made my point if you have no defense to my claims. I'm justified in making my original claim you found objectionable in the first place if you can't.
Report as
"Its an instruction to kill people who don't listen to priests"

It was not. It was an instruction to the Jewish people to obey Gods divine judgement. The penalty for goof against God was death. As going against God is a severe crime, it required a severe punishment.

Since we are given that God is real, and the Jews are the people whom He chose to reveal Himself and make His righteousness and sovereignty known, we can understand why this was a severe crime. Disobeying GOD Almighty is evil, the work of satan, and the wages of sin is death.

Use a black marker or white out and get rid of the message and then buy a sticker that you can use to write your name and them place it over the message and read that bible.

Listen to me-if you are not Christian and refuse to read the Bible, you do not need to. It is a free country, and the other religious people who have answered this question saying "She is just try to improve you," is not improving you by encouraging you to do something you don't want to do.

Keep the Book. You will not be who you are today in a 1yr, 5 years, 15 years you get my drift. It is a gift from the heart and you read it a bit at a time, not all at once. It is the word of God.
