This is going to depend greatly on your middle and high school. If you go to a middle school that doesn't require a foreign language, then you don't have to take it obviously. The same is true for high school. Most high schools don't require a foreign language, however, to get into college, you may need to take one.
The bottom line is this, however, the sooner you start learning a foreign language, the easier it should be. So, if you have the opportunity to learn now, I'd do it! Learning a foreign language can be a lot of fun and greatly improve your opportunities in the future.
It all depends on where you go. When I was in middle school you had to take a language for I think 3 years. The first year was Spanish, then French & the last year (in high school) we got to pick. But all and all you really should take a language in middle school. :)
