What do the whiskers on a dog or cat do?

Report as

There are special sensitive nerves at the base of the whiskers, and they help the animal know where it is in spacial relation to another object, especially if they can't see. For instance, I don't know about dogs but with cats if they're about to go through a hole or tunnel, they know that if their whiskers touch the sides of it then they can't fit through. That's because a cat's whisker-span is the same length as its body is wide.

a number of things. mostly its to help them judge if they will fit into tight areas. also when sleeping they pick up vibrations of movements that helps wake them.

It helps them to feel while they are travelling in the dark, or simply travel altogether. Their whiskers are very sensitive.
