How is it like when you are stuck in an elevator?

Like how long it took to get the elevator work after you call for help and stuff like that.

It's OK if you're not the panicky kind. The auto-stop works very well.

I'll try to tell this story without getting deleted.

When: Lunchtime 1987, Where: Amex Building, Sydney, Situation: Overcrowded lift, mostly full of well dressed, quietly spoken, urbane Amex staff.

We dropped like a stone past many floors before the automatic brake cut in and, since I was nearest the telephone, I called the mechanic. Then I did what I always do and told jokes until we were released about 20 minutes later.

A few days later, same lift and I was alone with two Amex women. The older one recognised me and said, "That was you in the lift the other day, wasn't it?"

It was.

"Did I yell out?"

She did.

She went white and gasped, "What'd I say?"

"Shit!"

"Thank God," she said, and the relief was obvious. "I thought I said 'fkg hell'."

She didn't mind if I heard it but didn't want her classy Amex friends to hear.

Wow, you have good memory since it was 26 years ago and you described it very well.

Some things stick in your mind. I can remember a lot further back than that. I can even remember the day I broke my father's carpenter's rule, and that was in 1939. :D

It took at least half and hour and it is WEIRD AND BORING.

Scary. Upsetting. You can potentially gain claustrophobia while in that elevator. It can feel very much like falling off a cliff from a different perspective, especially because it is an average human's reaction to start panicking.

if you remain calm, youre fine. you simply call the help desk and the elevator works again momentarily

Yes. We lived on the 4th floor of an apartment complex, 5 years ago, where the elevator would always get stuck.
