Not to scare you however, I am recuperating from major neck surgery and the first three 'bones' directly below the base of my neck are very tender to the point, at times, it hurts to even touch this area... You probably slept wrong. Hopefully your symptoms stem from muscle tension... If you can tolerate anti-inflammatories, take two tablets every six hours... Inflammation causes pain... Ice reduces my pain and discomfort better than heat, however, it might be reversed for you... Start with placing an ice pack in the back of your neck... If you don't get any relief, try a heating pad... If your symptoms do not go away in a few days, I suggest making an appointment with a licensed healthcare professional such as your regular doctor or an orthopedic doctor specializing in spines... You could have an issue with either a disk or one or more vertebra which are the series of small bones which make up our backbone... i hope you feel better very soon...

The bone is sore? :P Anyway, sounds like a sore muscle... You need to relax it. Put some icy-hot on it or a heating pad. If that doesn't work and it persists for more than a couple of days, see a doctor and ask about going to a chiropractor.
It is possible that you have a fracture or you had a bad sleeping posture. You need to massage the sore bone, use some ice and also hot pad. However, it is also possible that this can be a sign of arthritis or stress. It will be important if you consult a doctor.
