Science has proved an increase in healing and in people's mental health when they have an animal to pet or cuddle with. Therapy animals are brought into hospitals nursing homes etc so that the people there can have a chance to interact with them which speeds their healing times and gives them a better mental state and outlook on their life. Some Therapy animals are used to help people going through actual physical or emotional therapy or even children with learning disabilities. They can be a source of encouragement and comfort. and children with reading difficulties often find it easier to read out loud to a dog who will not judge them than to another human :) As boo mentioned they are often prescribed to those with anxiety or social disorders as well.

will a dog be good for eating disorder treatment

I haven't ever heard of that.. but if it helps a person by providing emotional support, reminding someone they now have another creature, who truly loves them unconditionally that they *must* remain healthy for... maybe. I suppose it could also help someone understand the importance of eating healthy regularly because they would need to feed the dog healthy regular meals.
