What do I do if I pulled or tore a muscle?

I pulled or tore a muscle this weekend (not sure which) and I need it to get better by tomorrow because I have time trials for swim. At morning practice I couldn't even do a flutter kick. What can I do to make it at least not hurt as much?

Icing it and heat should help, but I'd recommend NOT trying out tomorrow. Instead, I'd suggest going early and explaining to the coach that you injured it, and asking if you could perhaps do your time trials at a later date. He might have helpful suggestions for you, and a trainer would likely be nearby who could verify the damage done to your muscle. Also, if your muscle doesn't improve with time and rest, I'd recommend staying out the first season or until it COMPLETELY heals, and seeing a doctor. Working out with injured muscles can cause even more problems and injuries, and keep you out longer!

RICE method - "Rest", "Ice", "Compression", Elevation".

Go to the doctor/nurse/physio/coach and get the injury seen to so you can start with proper rehab.

One of the biggest barriers to progressing in a sport is getting badly injured, no athlete wants to hear they have to take time out but you're better off having to take a short rest so you can heal and get back to the sport you love rather than letting your injury get worse and worse and potentially being out for months.

If you actually tore a muscle then your screwed for tomorrow. If you pulled one a few days ago and you are not feeling it get better already I see no way that would be ready for action either. Heat is your best bet with a pulled muscle.

Today: stay out of the pool. Put ice in the injured muscle, 5--7 minutes at a time every hour. Elevate the limb if possible. Take your favorite OTC pain / anti inflamitory (aspirin, Tylenol, Motrin, Aleve, etc) per directions.

The RICE method is for sprains. If you tore the muscle it will not be better anytime soon. If it is torn then you CANNOT swim and MUST go see a doctor or it will get worse. If it is pulled then If you take an ice bath it will feel SOO much better by tomorrow. Just fill your bathtub with ICE COLD water. As cold as you can stand it and be brave about it too. Then just put like 20 ice cubes in it. I do this when I have pulled muscles. My physical therapist told me to. It works wonders for me. Hope it does for you too!!:)

If you pull one there isn't much you can do. Though R.I.C.E. is a good thing to help with the pain and to make the swelling go down. Rice stands for
Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate
Though if have torn a muscle then I would get to a hospital right away. Hope this helps!

Ice and heat should help relieve some pain. But I do not suggest that you swim. Pain is your body telling you something is wrong and that you must rest and let it heal. Do not tack pain meds before you work out or do anything strenuous you could hurt yourself even more and not know it because of them. I’m sorry but I think you should rest and let it heal :(. If it does not feel better or gets worse in a few days you should go see your doc to rule out a serious injury. I hope this helps and they you feel better soon.:)
