Do young bald eagles come back to nest a year later?

We have a pair of bald eagles that had 2 babies last year and 1 this year but now the adults have 3 young ones roosting and flying with them. We have been watching the nest all summer and know that there was only 1 baby. where did the other 2 youngsters come from?

Bald eagles "babies" do not come back to the nest they were born in. Adults will use the same nest year after year, continuously building upon them.

They raise the young till they are capable of flying off and hunting on their own. They are considered juveniles until about 4 years old when their white feathers begin to appear. The full white head and tail do not fully appear till they are 5 yo.

The others you are seeing may be some other juveniles trying to find their place in eagle "society" so to speak.

The first one wouldn't open "in my region" but I watched a bit of the second. There is no way I'd disturb those two birds. They'd be a bit stroppy with me, I think. I was surprised at how much activity there was on the slope behind them.

I was also surprised that they take five years to mature. Interesting. I'll look into them a bit more.

We also have a nesting pair of bald eagles on our land. The adults come back each year to the same nest....and improve on it and it gets bigger and bigger. Now, their nest is huge (about 6 feet tall). The young do stay with them for a long time, but eventually go off on their own. It takes them several years for them to get the bald eagle coloring. I can't be sure if all the bald eagles in that area are their young....some have tried to nest in the area, but none have lasted.

Bald eagles do not come back to nest after year. The nesting period depends on the breeds on the Northern, Alaska and Canada have different times for nesting. You can read the details on http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/birds/bald-eagles.asp and http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/eagle4.html.
