I can't gain weight. I'm 21 years old, four foot eleven inches, female, 77 pounds. any ideas what is going on?

it's not my thyroid, or any kind of parasites. I eat a ton of protein and carbs, as I am active and athletic. I do smoke cigarettes. the weight loss was 20 pounds in 11 days (went from 97 to 77 pounds) and I can't gain any weight, my doctor doesn't know what is going on, I'm just looking for ideas of what could be happening, or if anyone has heard of a similar case.

Sorry for not being of any help.

But you get a star for shedding a different light on the topic.

Cigarettes are unhealthy in every way. Cold hard truth. I exercise for an hour 3 times a week on a treadmill at the gym, tells me I burn 500 calories and all my scale tells me is a larger number every week. And believe me, that's not muscle weight.

I got an idea Zero, You probably burn 1500 to1700 calories a day; Even with the treadmill.
There are 1500 calories in a Wendy's Baconator meal
I know, because I'm desperately trying to stay slim.

I am, also, trying to BE slim. Hell, I know the effects of fast food. Can't remember the last time I willingly ate McDonald's. My parents feed me too well.

The problem is the cigarettes sadly. You should quit, and I know it might be hard, all the men in my family did, and do smoke, but the nicotine make you lose your appetite. I've seen many cases where an overweight woman or men smoked cigarettes as their diets because you do lose a lot of weight.

I have tried quitting, I originally quit when I lost the weight and stopped for about 4 months and the weight did not come back, I have a healthy diet also.
Report as
4 months isn't enough though, you should quit for the long run to see real results.

Take a celiac test from your doctor.

I had that done and it did come back normal, as well as the thyroid test coming back normal.

Hmmm cigarettes or stress can both cause significant weight loss.

You aren't terribly underweight for your height. Perhaps 10 lbs. In 10 more years you'll be typing a question like; "How can I lose some weight?"

It's the cigarettes you're smoking girl. Have you tried using weight gainer powder? You can get it at you're local health food store. Each shake you consume has 1500-2000 calories per serving. Have two shakes a day with regular food throughout the day and you're weight should go back up

I have been put on different weight gainers by my doctor, and it hasn't gained me a pound, that's what is so frustrating to me, I know something is wrong, just can't figure out what it is. Neither can my doctor.
Report as
Only thing that would probably help is quitting the smoking.

Have you asked your doctors about heavy metal poisoning? Ask for a blood test to see if there are metals in your system (this is expensive though). Not that this symptom is exclusive of heavy metal poisoning BUT - I had a friend and her husband, who just recently starved to death due to their illnesses. They had heavy metal poisoning. Her doctors took about 2 years to figure this out. Both of them underwent testing for AIDS (no) Cancer (no) and many other illnesses before they happened to test them for heavy metals. For your sake I hope this is not the case but don't wait 2 years of doctors scratching their heads. They were not sure where they were exposed either. Did not live crazy, reckless lives and always cared what they consumed.
