I tried many many times. I finally tried ecigs. I used them for less then 4 months then I was able to quit all smoking. Understand it was still very hard, but that gave me enough edge to not smoke even when I really wanted to. I'm working on 3 years as a nonsmoker!!!!

Cold Turkey. Smoking is an oral fixation, so be sure to replace it with a healthy substitute: gum, sugarless candies, etc. Also, incorporate some form of cardio exercise to help heal one's respiratory system. Safe Journey
A good third of my hypnosis practice is for smoking cessation. I have really good success with hypnosis and the vast majority are "one and done" - one session in about and hour and they're non-smokers. It works at the subconscious level where the behavior is controlled. If you really want to quit - and that's the thing, you must really want to quit - it works. Go on-line and look up hypnosis and smoking cessation and you'll find numerous scientific studies to support the position. Look into it. It works.
Try chew gum one that is specially made for smokers. I don't smoke. But my colleagues does and tried. Some of them did stop smoking and while the rest were taking it on small dosages and under control. Hope this helps.
