How can I make my cat gain weight?

I have a 17 year old male cat who is starting to get very skinny and is shedding more than normal. Besides that though, he's completely normal to my knowledge. I'm worried that he's too skinny. I weighed him yesterday and he's only 10 pounds. I tried feeding him kitten food because it has a lot of calories, but he didn't like it too much. any suggestions? anything would help.

First take to vet to see if teeth or gums have problems. My pet lost weight and I saw they only would eat with one side of their mouth-had a bad tooth that needed extracting. After ate and gained weight fine, also get a senior blood work to see if internal organs like liver and kidneys are working. Could be a tapeworm or even diabetes. If all okay after vet check then put broken pieces of fatty fish sticks or tuna mixed with their food so the food taste and smells like treats, the cat will eat the extra treats and may clean the entire bowl!

is he eating normally? maybe take him to the vet and see if there's anything they can do for him. he's a very old cat though, lots of shedding is normal. if his current food is hard for him to eat you could soften it with water

Start watching Paula's Party and Paula's Best Dishes with Paula Deen. She has some good ways for your cat to gain waight. I recomend that you melt butter and vegetable fat and mix it in with his normel food. Pretty soon it'll be garfeld-sized.

Dry, soft food. You might have to hand feed the old cat.

I am sorry to tell you this, but 17 is already very much for a cat. So, probably your cat doesn't have much to live and that is why it is loosing wait. You shouldn't be sad though as if it lived 17 years, it means it had a very good life.

17 i feel bad for him...but luckily some cats are supposed to be that weight.but if you are that worried contact your local vet immediately. you can also make homemade cat food with grilled fish, some meat products, love, some sugar and a little bit of salt and add some things your cat likes, give it plenty of treats and every now and then feed it some fish.

I don’t recommend going with a homemade diet. Human food has too many calories, and too few nutrients. Plus most cats have stomach upset from diets like the one you described above. It’s best to go with a dry cat food that has natural ingredients and few chemicals, dyes, and sweeteners.

With weight loss and hair loss, I would suspect thyroid issues. I would take him to the vet and have his thyroid functioning checked. If that is the problem, there is daily medication for the problem and radiation. At his age, the vet will likely recommend medication.

A weight loss can mean an unhealthy cat, so it would be best to take him to the vet as soon as possible, especially due to his older age. There are also some types of cat food made for underweight cats-see if that helps.

From what I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know when cats get older they tend to grow skinnier. As for the shedding, perfectly normal. But wow! 17? That's one old kitty!

ya but because he is losing hair it points to him having a nutrient deficiency which means he is not getting the nutrients he needs ether because he is not eating or has another problem. :(

You should tack him to the vet. Cats especially older cats can developed fatty liver disease were the liver breaks down too much fat and starts to build up toxins symptoms can include Prolonged anorexia – often of several week duration, Rapid weight loss, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Constipation, Muscle wasting, Depression, Downward flexion of head and neck, Jaundice (e.g., yellowing of eyes), Drooling of saliva, Cat may collapse in later stages, Other symptoms will be related to concurrent, underlying disease this disease can be fatal. You should tack him to the vet to cheek for reasons for his sudden Weight loss. They will tell you how to treat the reason and how to correct the weight loss. The loss of fur could come from too few nutrients in his diet. I hope this helps and that your cat gets better.

I think it is very possible that your cat may have a tapeworm. You can try OTC stuff but If you can at all take him to the Vet. I know that cats LOVE food that smells real strong. My cat I had for years had a tapeworm and actually ended up throwing it up, like a hairball. Freaked me out.

Take him to your vet to make certain the kitty is medically OK. There is a gel that has a lot of nutrients in it and it is high calorie. High Vit is the name. It comes in different forms and you normally pick it up, non prescription at a vets office.

There is also a prescription medication that the vet can prescribe for the kitty to increase appetite. I cannot recall the name, but they will know.

There are also pet homeopathic remedies, normally they come in non-alcoholic based tinctures by Apawthecary and another brand as well. Wholefoods and higher end pet stores would carry these or you can order online. Call the company or email them for suggestions on the best tincture for your issue.

Best of luck! :)

Try feeding him baby food, or cat treats. Make sure he has plenty of water, make sure he rests a lot. Keep an eye on him! Even if his time is coming, just do the best you can to make sure he is happy with you at that time, good luck (:

I'd start with a vet check-up, I used to have a hyperthyroid cat and work with 3 people with the condition. Weight loss without a loss of appetite and hair loss can indicate Hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland basically controls how fast your entire body runs. Your cat may not show all these symptoms, but 2 or more, get the thyroid checked.

Weight loss despite an increased appetite
Increased thirst and urination
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Behavioural changes (nervous/jittery behaviour, aggression, over-grooming and or bald patches, hyperactive, increased vocalisation)
Rapid heartbeat
Poor coat condition (see photos)
Weakness (occasionally)
Decreased appetite (occasionally)
Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Don't worry so much about him gaining weight .. Just make sure you are providing nutritious foods .. probably preferably soft food .. He's is very old at the ripe old age of 17 .. his teeth will be sensitive and he just needs to be loved and cared for...sounds like you are already doing a great job.

I know that there are some special cat sauces, otherwise, make some gravy for your kitty. The poor kitty may have a thyroid problem. Make sure to see a vet as well.

He's probably not feeling well. If you can afford the vet, maybe they will know why. But he is old.

There are cat foods for older cats that need extra calories. Talk to your vet or local pet shop. You might want to take him to the vet anyway if he's losing his fur and so much weight. Good luck. He may have a few more good years in him. Help him find them.
