(Sorry yashiona - for co-opting your thread for a rant :-))
It is depressing to realize that this kind of dry, formulaic approach to learning about the Scientific Method is what passes for education these days:
Rather than teaching kids that Science is largely a creative process where you make guesses (albeit well-informed one) about the behavior of the natural world, devise tests to determine if those guesses make sense, and draw conclusions on their consequent predictive powers, we instead teach them that a Hypothesis has 4 precise stages, make them memorize the names of these stages, list bullets of what each stage requires, and then make them regurgitate all this made-up nonsense back to the teacher.
What we end up with are kids with fancy memorized (made up) definitions, but no real idea of what a Hypothesis actually is..

There is only one thing required before a hypothesis can be formed... Curiousity!
Some of the things that must happen before a hypothesis is formed include explanation, observation and formulation. This is because a hypothesis is an uncertain statement about the connection between two or more variables.
research and some questions.Thats how we make a guess, before you start testing. Like the scientific method, its question, background research, hypothesis, testing and observation, drawing out the conclusions, finding out if your your hypothesis, is true or false, and that's how you get the results.
