What is a natural remedy to get rid of fleas. I hate pesticides

Report as

The best thing is Dawn the original. They use it for bathing animals on oil spills and stuff. I got a horrible flea problem this spring. I went from bombing the house with insecticide to putting flea killing powder on the carpet and let it stay over night then vacuumed the next day. To buying a special shampoo for my cats, to using advantage on my cats. How they and I survived all those chemicals I have no idea. Well, nothing worked though. Then I purchased Dawn the original and I really lather the cats. I let it stay for 20 minutes. This included me getting on the shower with the cats and making sure that they didn't harm themselves on the process of escaping out. I lot of scratches and clawing on my body, but I was not going to have any of those fleas again. They are almost as nasty as the Honey Badger, he walks backwards by the way. I also switched their flea medication to front line and I vacuumed daily. I don't have fleas anymore. :)

This is not only informative, it also is funny. I know about giving cats baths, or showers in your example, and it's not a pretty sight for the cat or my arms! haha. I do like the Dawn idea. I believe it doesn't have phoserpeous. (sp?) and it's better for the enivornment as well. The fun part is about the Honey Badger. They are the Badgers who have the incredible co-exisiting relationship with the birds, right? I didn't know they walked backwards! That is even funnier! :)

I have to respect your courage, your determination, and your pain tolerance leve, Morty, but this reminds me of the days before manned space flight when weightlessness could be experienced in a fighter plane at the bottom of a supersonic dive. Some genius wondered how a cat would react, given their capacity for landing on their feet, and sent one up with a pilot.

Everything went well until, at the bottom of the dive, the pilot released the cat.

It went straight for his lapo, dug in it's claws and hung on.

They didn't try that again.

Not ON the Dogs I hope!! It's bad for any mucuos membranes!
Report as
You can put it on them as long you keep the "dust cloud" away from their face. I have only done it once, and treat my yard now before I need to treat my dogs. You have to use the food grade though. (Which you can put on their food to prevent worms.)

Never heard of the food grade, will check it out. Thanks!:0).

I'm one who is always open to organic suggestions. Is it the acid in the orange pulp or is it the vitamie C? Do you rub the pulp side or the rind side? I didn't ask the question, but I'm interested in knowing if you have a moment to expound. Thanks! :)

Blue Dawn dish detergent works good. Lather your dog with it, let it sit for 5-10 min. Rinse well. This should kill any fleas on the dog. Works for me.

Put Soapy water in a bowl on the floor with a reading lamp shining on it overnight to get the ones that aren't on your pet.

For furniture and carpeting, I use Natural Defense by Sentry. It has all natural, harmless ingredients, such as peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, lemon grass oil, clove oil and thyme oil. It works great, I've been using it for years.

Tea Tree Shampoo. Open a Garlic capsule and put it in their food daily. Sprinkle Brewers Yeast on furniture(under couch cushions), and vacume it up later...

I thought about Tea Tree, but I've never used it on dogs or cats. It did help my husband. NO, not with fleas and ticks, with dry skin. hahaa! That stuff really works wonders for many things.

witt~ Brewers Yeast is a wonderful suggestion too. I've heard of that, but never used it either. I should write down all these fantastic ideas. The last thing I used was Frontline. :( Now, I feel badly when there are sooooo many other natural remedies. I have heard of garlic. Maybe I can get brownie points for that??? hahahahaa

Magic, LoL!!
You can also buy brewers yeast and garlic tabs, my Dogs used to think they were a special treat! No idea how I convinced them of that one!??
All the natural work really well most of the time, if stay on top of it diligently; but here on Island, we've learned the hard way.. no matter what we do, put the frontline on! ::(. Think it has a lot to do with amount of strays(cats and dogs) rampant wild deer, (yup! Deer! brought in from Europe by plantation owners way back), mice, rats, etc.. plus all woods around, and no cold spells to help kill of cycles. So we do.:(.
