Food &meds for each dog costs 2x as much as those for a cat. She feeds 164 cats & 24 dogs. Budget: $4240. How much can she spend on each dog

It is all about changing what you said into equations..
Let us say that the food and med for each dog = x and the and med for each cat = y
Since Food & med for each dog costs 2 times as much as those for a cat --> x = 2y
She feeds 164 cats & 24 dogs with budget: $4240 -->
24x + 164 y = $4240, since x =2y, then;
24 (2y) + 164y = 4240
48y + 164y = 4240
212 y = 4240 --> y = 4240/212 = $20
x = 2y = 2 x 20 = $40
That's all..I hope you got it, please if anything unclear feel free to comment on my answer.
Good Luck :)

Thank you so much! I knew I needed equations like that but I just wasn't sure how to set them up

A total of $40 will be spent on each dog in this case. To get this, we first use x to represent the amount spent on the dog for food as well as medication. Y will represent the amount spent on the cat. Therefore, we'll have 24x + 164 y = $4240. The overall equation is 24 (2y) + 164y = 4240, which is simplified to 48y + 164y = 4240. The value of y is $20. Since x = 2y, 2y will be 2 x $20 to get $40.
