How do you make a potato salad with an out of this world taste?

I have asked this several times, but I feel that I will eventually find the answer. A lady I know makes a potato salad that is out of this world, but when asked for the recipe says that ii is passed down from her great-grandmother and that the recipe can only be given to family. So I have tried the following ingredients singly; dill weed, sage, poultry seasoning, freshly ground peppercorn, anise, dry mustard, cream of tartar, nutmeg, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, ground cloves, vinegar, pickle juice, rosemary, marjoram, basil, cardamom, caraway seed, regular mustard, generic Miracle Whip, cumin, evaporated milk, ketchup, condensed milk, mayonnaise, bacon grease, powdered milk, coriander, cilantro, honey, and molasses. I did not try MSG because I doubt it was readily available to her great-grandmother. I did not try orange sandwich spread because it probably not invented when her great-grandmother made it I did not try paprika because there was no hint of red in it. I did not try olives or sour cream because I did not taste them in her potato salad. Please help the ingredient or combination of ingredients to achieve this taste. HELP!!!

Was it creamy or vinegary? On the sweeter side or sharp? Some recipes here: http://www.chow.com/food-news/54524/perfect-potato-salad/ I hope one of them might work out for you!

Taste is a very complex sensory mechanism. If you can describe the kind of flavor you are looking for, that would probably narrow down the ingredients (maybe even expand the amount you need). You may need to experiment to find this particular flavor. Try adding more of one ingredient. Don't be scared to mix them. Maybe you'll end up finding something even better while you are doing so.

But maybe the best way to get the recipe is to befriend the relatives :).

Good luck.

I wish I could befriend her relatives, but I live in Texas and she lives in North Carolina. She used to live in Texas.
