in psychology what are retrieval cues

Report as

In psychology, retrieval cues are basically hints that could help you retrieve a certain memory or piece of information. In a way, these cues serve as your own mental reminders, and they work by allowing you to associate new information with stuff that you already know. Usually, retrieval cues are created by forming vivid mental images. The more vivid the mental image, the more effective the retrieval cues, and the better the chance is for you to actually remember that certain information.
