Yes, it's best to build up some stamina so on your first day run a mile. On your second day run one mile and a half. On your third day run two miles. On your fourth day run two and a half ( or if you think you can run three) until you'll be able to run long distances. Even if you're going for short distance running and not long distance, this will help you with A. being able to sprint longer, and B. being able to increase your jogging rate.
I'm not sure if it'll make you faster however, it'll definitely help you adapt to run for longer periods of time. HOWEVER! you must take care that you train the proper way. I am a professional runner but I did not know how to run properly before training and I dislocated my kneecap because I weakened the knee. so please make sure to learn how to run the proper way which will strengthen your legs rather than cause my situation to happen.
