Whey is everything left from milk after cheese production. They isolate the proteins to make whey protein. It is a mixture of a number of proteins that is found in natural milk. I believe you are asking for muscle building. If you are making body building it is a must to keep a high protein diet and protein supplement is the easiest way to do that. There is no harm in it, however there is no proof that whey protein(or any other mixture of proteins) has any specific benefit whatsoever. You should take it mainly after exercises, you can take some before too if you are going to work hard.
Whey protein is basically a combination of globular proteins extracted from whey, the liquid substance produced as a by-product of cheese production. Whey is 5 percent solution of lactose in water, with minerals and lactalbumin. It is extracted after cheese is processed. You can read more at http://www.mealitary.com/glossary/whey-protein/.
Many people believe that a diet high in protein and low in fats and carbs speeds up metabolism. Whey is an easy was to add a lot of protein. If you do you need to make sure that you have no kidney issues and drink A LOT of water. Water flushes the protein out of your kidneys. Too much protein in the urine in your kidneys is bad.
