When should a teenager be allowed to stay home alone overnight?
My 15 year old son is an honor roll student, Boy Scout, and is extremely responsible. We are thinking about leaving him home alone overnight. He wouldn't have any issues with being afraid, and we have three large dogs and an alarm system. We live in a very safe neighborhood, and have neighbors (close family friends) who will be home, and his grandparents live less than a mile away and will be home. While he'll probably be up playing Xbox with his friends until 2 in the morning, he's not the type of kid to have a party or experiment with anything, and has never given us the slightest reason not to trust him. I've done some looking online, and there aren't any laws that cover this in Oregon. However, there are some states where a kid has to be 19 to stay home alone overnight, and this blows my mind... I had a job, was putting myself through college, and had almost saved up enough for a down payment on a house when I was 19!
