i use my iPod while it is charging. is that bad for it? does it make it take longer to charge? does it wreck the battery?

it also gets very hot at the back, even when i take the case off. is this bad for it? how do i make it cool down? why does this happen?

Maby. Just let it cool down and give it about 20 minutes before you go at it again. If it gets too hot it will either shut down automatically or the thingy magiger the processes it will burn and ruin your device.

yea it actually damages the battery over time, that's one of the reasons why Apple made the charger wires so short, so people won't mess with the device while its charging :3

Apple batteries are specially designed to be used while in use. But it's still recommend it to let it rest.

Yes, it's bad. You are pretty much canceling out the charging process. Just let it be while it charges. Then unplug and use as it finishes charging.
