You do need to give out your policy number to the other insurance company. Insurance companies usually conduct their own investigations to determine the person at fault in car accidents. You may be required to give your personal details as well.

And it is a good idea to never state that you were at fault, even if you think you are. Give your insurance company an opportunity to allege either "contributory negligence" or "mitigating circumstances" if they decide either concept was involved.
