How can I keep my hair from getting so knotted up?

my hair is so thick and kinda long about half way down my back. before I shower ill brush it. ill brush it when I get out of the shower and it'll still be knotted up and hard to brush and in the morning too.. what can I do to make it stop getting so bad? I braid it at night before I go to bed. and I really don't want to cut it off.. is there any good shampoo and conditioner that'll help or what?

brush dry hair before you shampoo and always always always COMB wet hair!!!! if your having that much trouble with your hair you should always condition your hair. Get a hot oil treatment you can do at home or get a good heavy conditioner like Aussie not very costly put plenty on your hair, COMB it thru, put on plastic bag, take a small towel run hot water over it from the tap, ring it out and wrap that around your head until cooled. Rinse hair.... rinse rinse rinse rinse get all that conditioner out.... COMB your hair out let it dry naturally.... See if it feels and acts better..... NEVER Brush wet hair never never never!!!!

After washing it use a leave-in conditioner/detangler.

I use a wide tooth comb to run the conditioner through my hair while in the shower. Also don't rub back and forth with the towel when drying. That is just forcing tangles into your hair. Work the towel from roots to ends.

Grease it up just before you shower once a week or so. It washes out normally, pay attention to the ends. Olive oil and avocado oil are wonderful.

use a good shampoo in really hot water. then in the shower brush it. ( i have a brush that's water proof and made to brush wet hair) then condition last thing you do and do it in really cold water. then brush it again still in the shower) then when you get out brush it one more time and put it in a low braid. i used to have this problem but now i have shiny smooth and untangled hair.

i have the same problem, my hair is very thick and gets tangled really easily, what i use for shampoo and conditioner is Pantene Pro-V Smooth.... it helps my hair stay smooth, also I would bring a brush to school, so during a break you can brush it really quick. And a lot of people say to brush your hair in the shower, but its actually bad for your hair... it bends your hair and damages it, but it is good to brush your hair before you get in the shower. And i have a comb in the shower, and its was made to not damage hair, like its really thick, so thats all the info i can give you, hope i helped! :D

*LOTS* of conditioner. Don't put conditioner in your scalp though, only on the ends. Also use Moroccan Oil!!! I seriously recommend this! One more tip; brush or comb your hair the *minute* you get out of the shower. Leave-in conditioner works well, too.

I was always told not to ever brush or comb dry hair always have it damp or wet. Plus when you shampoo it and condition it comb or brush your hair after you scrubbed and lather it. Once you get out of shower twist wrap it in a towel for ten min. Than put leave in conditioner and brush ur hair. And sweet dreams

Main n Tail! Also, when brushing your hair, start at the bottom. If you start at the top and hit a tangle, it will turn into a knot and will break you hair. Hope this helped!

This is what I did because I had the same difficulty with my hair once. ( highlight once!) But I still do this routine. When you condition your hair, put the conditioner in your hair. Then, use a ponytail holder to tie your hair back. Let it sit in there for about five mins. In the meantime, do something like wash your body or face. When you think five mins has passed use a paddle brush or towel brush on your hair (With the conditioner in your hair) and go through it as your just doing your hair. Rinse. Towel dry and moisturize and your done! Just style your hair. Enjoy!

leave the conditioner in for a while longer than you usually do, 3 minutes is usually good, and don't EVER comb/brush your hair when it's wet, it causes the tips break and you might even break the hair of. Dry your hair with a hairdryer, don't forget the heat protection and then brush your hair with a fine haired brush. Always start at the tips and work your way up. Good luck :)

Use sulfate-free shampoo. There are reasonably priced choices if you look carefully. Sulfates are horrible for your hair. I had hair the same length as yours, and it always got knotted into a "rat's nest" at the base of my neck even though I kept it brushed. Brushing the rats nests out of my hair tore it so bad in the middle I had to get it all cut to nearly shoulder length. Hair is much healthier sulfate-free. Not long ago I unintentionally starting used a shampoo with sulfates, and after only TWO days the rats nests were back. That's how damaging sulfates are. Go sulfate-free if you want healthier hair with fewer knots and tangles, and also less frizz.

I use a children's detangler. It leaves my hair really smooth and gets rid of all my tangles. Use the orange Johnson's Buddies easy comb detangler. It works wonders! For shampoo and conditioner use Pantene. Also, a deep conditioning treatment can leave your hair easy to brush. I'd also recommend using a wide tooth comb on wet hair and this brush on dry hair- "T I G I Bed Head Work It! Style Paddle Brush" (obviously it doesn't need to be this specific brush, but in fact its done the best for me and always works.) I would suggest sleeping in three-five pigtails because when you sleep in braids it promotes breakage. Good luck!

I brush my hair before shampooing,I also use extra conditioner... I brush my hair after washing my hair, then blowdry it then comb it. Try using children's detangling spray. U can get it at Dollar General,or Walmart. A great idea is sleep in a ponytail,so the next day,it'll be just like it was when you went to bed! :)

Keep your hairs short as you can and avoid puffing by any ways such as wind blow or speeding up bicycle or car and sure shampoo or condition your hairs regularly.

get a brush that has slight magnetism, i think that in the night your hair may be rubbing against the pillow and collecting static electricity, which might cause it to tangle, i dunno i don't have experience with this,,, i'm a boy.

if you want actual conditioning help, you should use moraccan argan oil in your hair after your shower and loreal 5 repair as your conditioner and shampoo. its pretty good stuff. and well, by chance (just by chance) do u shake your head in your sleep? cause i used to do the that when i was roughly 5-10 years old and i would always wake up with the same issues your facing with your hair.

Brush hair thoroughly with a natural bristle brush prior to washing. Apply shampoo directly to scalp working down through hair gently so as not to cause snarls. Work conditioner through hair from ends to roots. Use a good feta going comb like http://shop.avon.com/assets/images/prod/PROD_1137953_XL.jpg to comb out any tangles. Rinse and gently towel dry hair - do not twist in towel on top of your head. Comb through final time with detangling comb and air or blow dry. Keep a spray bottle with water and about 2 tablespoons of conditioner to work out any knots after hair is dry.
