There are many ways. Some are mentally ill and can't stay on meds or afford care and can't hold a job. Some are drug addicts or alcoholics who also can't hold jobs because of their addictions,. Some lose their job (often through no fault of their own) and can't find another before they get kicked out of their homes for non payment of rent/mortgage. The problem with this last group is that it is often sometimes very hard to get back on your feet if you have no friends or family to help you. You can't get a job w/o an address, a place to shower or wash your clothing. Homeless shelters are often too full to take in more residents and can be dangerous places. It is very sad no matter how ppl got that way. (there are a *very* small percentage of ppl who choose to be this way they are also often mentally ill, though some others for whatever reason prefer to be drifters but as I said this is a very small percentage of the homeless population)
Drug addictions, Alcohol problems.. Rather spend their money on alcohol then other things they need and could use,They may have got divorced,They really have no family to care for them or to help them out if they need,Some are homeless by choice though. Unemployment..
Even some kids that turn 18 and wont live to parents standards may be kicked out, slowly get involved with the wrong croud, loose sense of pride and responsability, start using alcohol and/or drugs go into a siking hole that is hard to get out of and become homeless and/or die early Poor beings!

Lots of reasons. The person could've been kicked out of the house without a job, some can't keep a job, some are mentally ill and cannot function properly to have a job, some are too lazy to get a job and want to easily get money and small items from passerby, some just aren't accepted into some sorts of shelter, some are fugitives on the lam, and some just like living on the streets.
