What can we do ourselves to try to fix a 1980s solar water heater that is acting strangely?
We have a 1980s solar water heater working fine until a water main broke down the road and apparently dumped sediment into our water system about 10 days ago. The water heater seemed to be OK, although when I first turned on the water after the break, there was a lot of sputtering. I assume that was air in the system. But off and on since then, the water suddenly turns from hot to ice cold and back again during showers. Our son took the last shower of the day two days ago and reported that the water turned cold and stayed cold before his shower was finished. Last night, we checked the temp gauge, and it said there was no hot water, even though there was. What is going on? Should we flush the heater? What can we do before we have to call in an expensive professional?
