I don't think any is better than the other because both cause slow development of the child. Both cause problems with the developmental ability of the child and affect social interactions. The important thing is to accept the child and support them.
Autism would be considered as "worse". They're very similar, treated the same way & to be frank a real pain in the butt. The good news is that over the last 20 years they've had good results with different meds & counseling. In fact the man Dustin Hoffman portrayed in Rain Man is a real person. He had to be in the public eye so much that he has actually become a bit "normal"

mhmr ( mental health mental retardation) is a general category that can include different mental/emotional impairments and developmental delays. There is such a wide range of conditions and level of severity within that broad category. Can you be more specific or give more details? The term Autism is more specific, but with autism there is a wide range of level of severity. Some people with autism function very well and some need support indefinitely. . The way you asked your question, the answer is "it depends on many different factors".
