How do I figure out what 100% of a number is, if I only know that 40% is 1,047 ?

Report as

If 40% of a number is 1,047, to get 100% of the same number is simple. Just multiply 100 by 1,047 to get 104,700. The next step is to divide 104,700 by 40 to get 2,617.5.

Let this number to be (Y), 40% of Y = 1,047
Y . (40/100) = 1,047
Y = (1,047) x (100/40) = 2,617.5

In math, "of" is equivalent to "times."

"Is" is equivalent to "equal."

(40%) times x = 1,047 (40/100) * (x) = 1047 or (.4) * x = 1047

Solving that equation gives you 2617.5

Isn't 100% of a number just that number?

You are right, but it's not what she meant. She just worded the problem incorrectly. Often it's hard to figure out what the questions really mean.

Oh ok lol I'm not that good in math anyway;p

Write an equation.
You want to know:
40% of what number is 1,047?
.40 x w = 1,047
