Jesus was crucified on a stake. in their time, people who were considered criminals were placed on stake taken from their roofs(beam) the use of cross was later used by the emperor constantine who was the sun god worshiper that later added Christianity to pagan worship so that christians and pagan worshipers would be united. since then, the catholic church used cross till date
The word used is Starros (in Greek), which actually means post, stake, or pole. The reason it is called a post or pole is the cross member was carried by the condemned person on their back to the location of the pole and then they are hoisted up onto it and the cross member is then set upon the top portion of the pole, there-by making it a cross. The poles were usually used over and over again.
None , Jesus (PBUH) wasn't created to be crucified nor was he , rather God saved him and raised him to Himself . Let alone that the there is a great differences in the story in the gospels which discredit it is reliability .
( 157 ) And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.
( 158 ) Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
It was a cross of sorts, tho not exactly as depicted in most pictures. The roman 'cross' probably was fairly close to the ground. The part Jesus had to carry was probably just the cross bar. The criminal in question was bound or nail to this then it was lifted and dropped into place and then the feet delt with i believe. So i guess you could say 'both'. A big stake to which was attached a cross bar that created a cross shape.

Interestingly, biblical writers describe the instrument of Christ's death as a "tree." Notice Acts 5:30: "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree." Also, Acts 13:29-30: "Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb." Finally, Peter writes: ". . . who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness. . ." (I Peter 2:24; see also Acts 10:39; Galatians 3:13). Whether the use of this term is more descriptive than literal cannot be determined, but under time restraints as occurred during Jesus' trial and crucifixion, the Romans are known to have used living trees as stauron for crucifixions.
So, did Jesus die on a cross? Maybe. Was it a pole or stake? Possibly. But, frankly, the shape of the object on which Jesus was crucified does not matter. What does matter is that Jesus died for our sins and that His death purchased for us eternal life. Read more: http://www.gotquestions.org/cross-pole-stake.html#ixzz2eX8IEPoY
many people think that jesus was put on a cross but lets take it from the only truly reliable source we can learn from the bible, Matthew 27:22-36 is were youll find the scritures that clarify the events that happened to jesus both before and during his death and specifically in matthew 27:31 that says " Finally, when they had made fun of him, they took the cloak off and put his outer garments upon him and led him off for impaling."
If we look at the word impaling in the dictionary it says and i quote im·pale [im-peyl] Show IPA verb (used with object), im·paled, im·pal·ing. 1. to fasten, stick, or fix upon a sharpened stake or the like. 2. to pierce with a sharpened stake thrust up through the body, as for torture or punishment. 3. to fix upon, or pierce through with, anything pointed.
Cross. #1 It is historical that Romans used crosses. #2 Find the latest Shroud of Turin dvd on net flix the evidence there shows a man that was on a cross as the evidence has his blood running down the wrists instead of down the arm which goes with the laws of gravity. A stake puts your hands above your head. That came from JWs -false prophets they are.
