If you fired a gun in space would it still have some effect?

Report as

In open space, with no gravity and no air, you wouldn't be able to fire a gun in space. You would die first. But hypothetically, for the sake of this answer, it would blow the person firing backwards. Whatever they were trying to hit would most likely not be hit, but the bullet would float around for a while after zooming for about three seconds.

I believe we're all assuming that you would be wearing some sort of insulated protection with an air supply rather than attempting to brave space in a t-shirt and shorts.

I just like to be specific, I'm in a non-hypothetical mood today.

Even at that, you remain conscious in a vacuum for around sixteen seconds. Thus, you could most likely pull off a shot or too if you were truly that desperate.

The bullet would actually gain speed the more time that passes, since theres no gravity and no atmosphere there would be nothing to slow it down
Report as
Because of there being no gravity, the bullet would move but it wouldn't gain speed. Nothing gains speed with nothing to propel it forward but sheer momentum, that stops after a time.

I doubt it would get out of our atmosphere but if it did it would probably hit an asteroid or just float infinitely

It hitting an asteroid is very unlikely, like not even 1 in 1,000,000.

Most conventional firearms would work in space. Because there would be no air resistance, the bullet could conceivably fly indefinitely.

no in a vacuum u can not fire a gun because there's no Oxygen to ignight the black powder and it would go but would soon slow down if you could get it to fire because there are still particles ie: some Oxygen nitrogen and all that to slow it down that what NASA had a problem with when thay were trying to keep there space ship in low orbit.

Well, theres still some pressure with the spark, which would fire the bullet, so yes, it would still shoot

Although, the person firing the gum would also move in the opposite direction
