How many amps does a 3 1/2 ton heat pump motor draw?

I know this probably varies depending upon such things as the manufacturer, seer rating, etc., but I am looking for a ballpark number. This is a 15 seer Carrier heat pump. I am installing a new heat pump and I have two different opinions. One person tells me that the 5kw heat strip and the blower motor will pull 33 amps and another person is telling me that it will only pull 24 amps. My house is wired with a 30 amp breaker and 10 gauge wire, so I need to know who is correct. I don't want to spend money rewiring unless it is absolutely necessary. I already found out that the 5kw heat strip pulls 21 amps. So the question comes down to how many amps does the motor pull? Thanks.

For a 3 ton air handler with 5 kw heat strips they are generally require a 30 amp breaker, which is what a 10 gauge wire will hold, however, if you use a 5 kw heat on a 3 ton heat strip you are probably going to have trouble keeping temperature when it's under 40 degrees outside.

Every heat pump motor has an FLA number on its unit data plate and this is the number that indicates how much amps it can use draw at full normal load. FLA stands for Full Load Amperes. It is the current the unit will.
