How dangerous are thunderstorms?

So, I was reading online that you shouldn't shower during thunderstorms, which is terribly inconvenient, and the article also stated that you should unplug all electronics and refrigerators, and keep away from refrigerators... Are thunderstorms really that dangerous? Also, don't apartments have lightning rods? Wouldn't that prevent lightning from hitting the pipes?

Yes, the lightning can be very dangerous. The main danger is when you get caught in the open. Also a hail storm can be very nasty then. The risk that a lightning hits a house can also never be completely ruled out. Also lightning rods only reduce the dangers, but can not eliminate it totally. The chance that you get struck inside a house is small, but there is the fire hazard. And of course electrical appliances are in danger, because a surge can really ruin all your appliances at once - even if the lightning only hits in your neighbourhood. That may not be dangerous, but very expensive.
