Why do i have to pay tax on a car if your the 2nd owner if the taxes was paid when first owner bought the car and paid taxes on it

In Washington we have to pay sales tax on everything except food. No matter how many times a car is sold each new owner has to pay a 7.0 sales tax (that's my county others are higher) on the amount paid for the car. That's a dealer or an individual. No, it's not fair

Yea I just feel its a little unfair you work an pay taxes then you turn around a pay taxes again on anything you buy like groceries or anything then you pay taxes to the state when you buy a used car they got their tax money the first time. I understand title fees an insurance an all that but it seems people are being double taxed every where they go. You don't have to pay a second tax buying stuff from a yard sale. a car should fall in that category if you buy from private seller.

The only way to get around it is have the seller write a bill of sale for a very low amount or saying it was gifted to you. The gift thing can only be used once & it has to be a private party not a dealer. I know they tax us to death when there's not enough money to go around anyway.

Buy it from an Individual and they don't charge tax but a business will. Yeh. It sounds wring i agree.

This is because you didn't buy the car direct from the first owner. If the car was sold to a dealer who is now selling it to you, then you will have to pay the taxes. Get more details on http://www.dmv.org/buy-sell/used-cars/used-car-taxes-fees.php.
