Why don't people take food allergies seriously?

I was just think about this because this morning I went to this smoothie place. They had a smoothie that was made with peanut butter and I asked if the peanut butter was gluten free because I am a celiac. The girl actually rolled her eyes at me, went and got the jar of peanut butter and slammed in down on the counter and was like, "Yeah, it's gluten free." Then her and another guy behind the counter started talking about how everybody has to have gluten free or dairy free or peanut free, and "why do they even bother to eat?"
It was pretty embarrassing, but for me Gluten free will be a must for the rest of my life. I also have to stay away from dairy because I don't tolerate that well. I don't understand why people don't take it seriously or any other food allergy for that matter.

1.) I know how ya feel, I am celiac too.
2.) they shouldn't act that way because you have a medical condition, at least they didn't poison you.
3.) you could always explain to them that a bit of gluten will cause severe stomach pains and may end up killing you.
4.) make sure they wash the silverware before making yours, even slight contamination will set you off.

PS) celiac is not an allergy, it is an intolerance :P

Unfortunately, you encountered employees who can't be bothered with helping customers... It isn't that people don't take food allergies seriously, you just ran into some ignorant people...

First I would complain to their managers and higher up. And second I feel ya. My son has allergies, (peaches, peas, grass, mold, latex and ladybugs) so when I start asking when is in the food people get upset. His one school made such a big deal out of it that they asked JUST pack his lunch. I agree its a pain in the butt but its not my sons fault. Did you know that banana and tomato skins have latex so he cant have them

... on the other end of the spectrum ... there are people who take it TOO seriously.

There are school districts in OR/WA that don't allow children to bring lunches from home ... because some parent might {gasp} make a PB&J sandwich for their kid. Or send cookies with peanuts for THEIR child to eat.

It's like that at my sons PreK. They also don't allow any cupcakes or foods for birthdays either. We have to bring in the superfun stuff like pencils.lol. But it's ok for them. They're too little to understand if something has something in it they're allergic to. Oh you have candy,I want some. And sneak behind the teacher. Then there will be hell for the teacher. Now older kids know better so its different. But better safe than sorry since some allergies can be fatal.

Agreed ... but these are Middle and High Schools ... totally ridiculous.

I think part of it is to indoctrinate the kids to a "nanny government" mentality.

Because they don't understand what they don't experience. You should have told them you have a disease and you can't eat gluten. Help educate the ignorant so next time they won't be rude for no reason.

What jerks! I would report them to the manager, or call the corporate office. That behavior is way out of line, WHATEVER their opinions on diet requirements.

Some people are just intolerant a$$holes. I had to have a lengthy debate with someone about why peanut products were removed from schools but milk wasn't ("hey, the kids can choose to just not drink milk, they can also choose to not eat peanut butter." I had to explain the differences between lactose intolerance, dairy allergies, and peanut allergies.)

Maybe they were having a bad day. You know, frustrated with so many special requests. They really should treat customers better than this. I have allergies too and it just wears me down so often.

It has not reached to the level of social norm. Society has not developed an "acceptance" of this sort of thing because medical knowledge and technology has allowed you to live where only a few years ago you would have died. It is hard to make for social allowances for people who are dead.

Since you are supposed to be dead, the next time this happens just tell them you are a zombie and this is the only way for you not to eat their brains.
