What Causes Tortuous Colon?

Report as

Tortous colon is another term for diverticulosis, a disease of the colon wherein the weak areas of the colon walls bulge out and form pockets. These pockets can burst and release bacteria and waste products into sterile abdominal cavity and cause infection. A mostly meat diet (low in fiber and high in fat) and frequent constipation increase risk of getting diverticulosis. Presence of several pockets in the colon is termed as diverticulosis. The deformed colon cannot be returned back to its original shape; therefore management is centered on preventing constipation to prevent build-up of pressure in the pockets.
