There are souls that people have and they go somewhere when they die(I'm not gonna say where because some people get offended) But a trapped spirit doesn't exist because it is an entirely different entity and nothing from this world can hold it back. So a white spirit thing that pops out of the wall and yells BOO!! Doesn't exist
Haha I asked a dude that same question in the third grade...I was all like: do you believe in Ghosts? And you know what that child said?? He said this: "no... but they ARE real." I was like... Dude. What. The. Heck. XD
If you believe in an afterlife then there is nothing in the world says there can't be. If you believe in the Bible then there is nothing in the Bible says there can't be or aren't--quite the contrary! If you believe in hard science and no afterlife then for you there are no such things as ghosts. Ghosts are a surviving phenomena which have been around for thousands of years, if not longer; and have mention in every single human culture. The Irish have leprauchans, the Icelandic people have Fairies; ALL cultures and societies have ghosts. You read some of the stories and it's really quite impossible that all those people in all those cultures over all those instances were making the stuff up. Also the way ghost appear, and where they appear, often follows unusual and methodic patterns. Ghosts are a mystery.

Well...of course you realize that nobody will know the truth of the matter until we are in the presence of God, but I have a couple of thoughts about this subject, and I have to show you 2 Bible verses to set the stage, so here goes. I have answered this question many times before with the answer "there are angels and there are demons, and ghosts are demons "acting" like ghosts." But now I'm not so sure about that and I'll show you what made me doubt that ... Revelation 9 tells us about a war that has not happened yet (it is one of two that are prophesied to happen before Armageddon), called the sixth trumpet judgement war, here's verse 14." Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men." Okay, do you see that angels can be bound to a place? And do you see that these angels "slay the third part of men"? And the news media has not reported any sightings of angels over the Euphrates River right? so they are invisible, and part of the "invisible spirit world" and they are "bound" to a particular place.. So lets just hold that thought and go look at something else from the Old Testament. I remembered from 1 Samuel, that king Saul sought out a fortune teller to speak to the deceased prophet Samuel, and in 1 Samuel 28, we see her described as "...a woman that hath a familiar spirit". So there are spirits, and at least some of these spirits are "familiar". Hold that thought, and I'll come back in the comments to discuss this further...
I have never had an encounter with anything like that either, and my mind is open to anything paranormal, yet it remains a possibility. the world is full of the seen and the unseen; I have seen some odd and strange things on this journey, but not a ghost. It would probably truly terrify me.
By " demons" I mean wicked spirits of the invisible realm. To people of the Orient the subject of "demons" is nothing strange, for demons play a large part in their religions. But by "demons" I mean malicious spirit creatures, not those creatures described by these Orientals, same as ghosts here. I am talking about the powerful, superhuman spirit creatures of which the Holy Bible speaks. True believers in God, true, informed Christians, take the subject of the demons very seriously. The outstanding champion of Christianity, the apostle Paul, warned us to be most serious about demons, for we are in a life and death fight with those stronger than we are we have to be serious. In one of the fourteen books of the Bible that he wrote he said: " You went along with the crowd and were just like all the others, full of sin, obeying Satan, the mighty prince of the power of the air, who is at work right now in the hearts if those who are against The Lord. All of us used to be just as they are, our lives expressing the evil within us, doing every wicked thing that our passions or our evil thoughts might lead us into." ( Ephesians 2:2-3) Living Bible Also: " Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able stand safe against all STRATEGIES and TRICKS of Satan. For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against persons without bodies---the evil rulers of the unseen world, those mighty satanic brings and great evil princes of darkness who RULE this world; and against huge numbers of wicked spirits in the spirit world." ( Ephesians 6:11-12) Living Bible Answer for the person that asked the question please.
Rainbows are a remnant of the rain. Rainbows are both transparent and invisible just like ghost and spirits. Is the rainbow their abode. Heaven is said to be somewhere up there and the rainbow appears to be the only viable part of something that encompasses the whole earth. Prove me wrong. Personally. I believe in ghost because what remains of you after you die is something you never were without it you can only be what you truly are. Some would say nothing and I will say. Amen. Amen. Amen. Because I am dead.
