Do i need a contractors license to be a painter in California?

I'm 21 years old and wanted to start my own small painting business, just me and a friend of mine. My dad has been doing this for a little over 10 years and taught me everything i know. I was wondering if i need a contractors license to do this in California. Another friend said i should try a union, but im not sure.

You need a contractors license, you can inherit your fathers license in California when he retires, but until then you need to get your own or work off of his license if he will let you.

In California, any person who contracts to perform work valued at $500 or more must hold a current, valid license from the California State License Board. As a painter, you will need a license because you will be contracting for more than $500 in most cases. See the details on www.cslb.ca.gov/PublicWorks/WhatKindOfContractor.asp.

With my experience, i've been hiring people to paint a lot of houses and most of them have no license at all! But they do a very good job on everything i ask them to do. As long as you know how to do it, and make the best results and follow safety rules, avoid getting complained from the neighbors around the neighborhood by prevent paint from floating in the air, some people might not like smelling it, and if they have to smell it all day then you will have a hard time to get the problem solved. Good luck friend!
