What does 'smart casual' actually mean?

I have been told the uniform for my new job is smart casual. i know i can't wear a skirt and have to wear quite chunky work boots but don't know what else to wear. PLEASE HELP!

What's the job? I'm guessing that "smart casual" is a term the person made up, and you're in some job that requires physical labor or outdoor/factory work? Then the dress is casual, just be SMART about what you wear, i.e. appropriate for the job (don't wear gym shorts to a mechanic shop.)

Smart casual refers to clothing/attire that is informal, yet neat depending with your work environment. You can wear jeans and a nice top/shirt or a simple trouser with low heeled shoes.

I was first introduced to this phrase on vacation in Bermuda about 15 years ago. It means: preppy. clean and neat. No low cut, glittery tops and tight pants on one end and no dirty, ripped or slummy looking clothes on the other end.
