Almost everything we do in the Government COULD be (and at some point in history has been) done in private industry. Private armies? Done; lots of times governments have hired mercenaries. Private old age pensions? Done- we do it all the time. Private parks? Done. Private roads? Done. But we would experience wrenching disruptions at this point to convert public enterprises to private ones. The question must be: can we afford to keep them governmental? For those whose marginal use is minimal, conversion to private may make sense. But certain activities of the government, like the military and several cabinet departments, are best done by the government. Others are best done by states (education for example) and yet others by individual choice via tax policy. In my mind, I think the Department of Defense is best preserved as a governmental function, so that we have a professional and uncorrupted military. If it were privatized I suspect corruption would ensue.
