Well we know that because the body will be put back together and resurrected 1Cor 15, some unto life eternal, most unto the judgment of the great white thrown Matt.7:12-13 & Rev 20, it is thus important to place the body in a tomb or grave, etc. as opposed to cremation or other unbiblical practices. In regards to the souls of the dead, they have already left the body. According to the Bible, some are in Heaven Rev. Others are in Hell Luke16 ... Hope this helps
In the old testament it was considered unclean to touch the dead, but when Jesus came to do his Father's will, he defeated death. Death is just a door opened to better life for those that believe. Since death has been defeated, the respect given should be ones genuine kindness for ones life and family.
