Liberalism is an ideology, it is the opposite of conservatism. The anti-slavery movement, women's right to vote, child labor laws, environmentalism, civil rights, and more recently marriage equality, equal pay, overturning the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military. All of these causes were liberal causes, and each one was opposed by conservatism. The organized slander against liberalism got its start during the civil rights movement when the Dixiecrats of the south were angered by the efforts of the ACLU who were seen as "those Yankees from their liberal northern colleges" A decade later the bashing was continued by the anti abortion conservative Christians. Today liberals are bashed for caring about the poor and defending workers rights and the middle class.
My opinion. People who are somewhat sensitive on certain issues, but have good intentions perhaps.. They have a tendency to overdramatize things. Case in point; when talking about fundamental muslim violence they will use the argument that the Christian Crusades did a lot of damage; which they did; but dismiss the argument that the Muslims invaders were also very severe to the Christian and Jewish residents of the countries they invaded at that time. Fundamentally, the muslims did, at the time, pretty much what the extremist muslims are doing now. They forget that part.
What makes you think they are misunderstood? And both sides of the political spectrum get ridiculed.
Back to your question...Liberals think the government should take a larger role in supporting people who "cannot" support themselves. Most people have no problem helping those who NEED it. (It is the ones who do nothing to help themselves that most people have a problem with "helping)
Liberalism is an ideology that despises self supporters, personal freedom, personal responsibility and has a disdain for traditional morals/values. They want to "make a change". They don't care about individuals as it's all about the group of people and "fairness". The last makes me laugh as life is anything but fair. Not to mention how hypocritical many of them are. Scream they want gun control in the name of children yet condone abortion. They scream for choice unless it comes to school choice.
Liberals are now actually progressives, a new term coined decades ago to disguise the communist/socialist agenda. They hate individual liberty and responsibility. They hate capitalism and want to take from hard working people and give it to the poor. They love the idea of this big government dictatorship where the government takes care of everyone and regulates everything in our lives.

Liberals ( to liberate) want to push for changes, to rock the boat. Conservatives (to conserve) want everything to stay as it is; the comfort zone to them. Most people's dispositions also tend toward one or the other. I am a liberal (2nd born), my brother is a conservative (first born). We cannot talk about certain things because we don't agree, so we don't go there. The liberals and conservatives go there, and neither one of them understands why in the world the other doesn't agree. It'll never change.
