Is it difficult to work as a waitress?

I heard that waiters/waitresses get paid really well depending on the restaurant but the job can be pretty difficult. Can some of you guys describe to me what it is you have to do or what the job implies and if it's worth it, thanks.

It depends on the restaurant, as you said. Some places that are fully staffed require you to take orders and be courteous. Others are more in depth- ring people, fill glasses, roll silverware, bus your own tables, help the busers on a busy day/night, prep desserts, prep salads, mix dressings, seat people, door greet- the list gets proprietary from then on out. Some places mix things up. At Texas Roadhouse, for example, the whole front end staff lines up for a line dance performance multiple times a day. Of course, you are always required to be presentable, courteous, and knowledgeable. Study your specials. Practice walking with speed and poise. Keep track of orders, tables, and help where you can. Be careful- some restaurants salary and tip, others do NOT salary and the waitresses live only on tips. All in all, however, I recommend it if you can keep up with a fast paced, fluid environment in both food services and customer service.

Dealing with people is always difficult. And dealing with managers can be difficult. And dealing with the cooks who ruin your orders, sometimes on purpose, can be hard. But in the right restaurant you can make very good tips.

You ONLY get paid well if you can make a lot of tips ... otherwise, you get minimum wage.

And the best way to get a lot of tips ... is to be real nice to your customers. Remember their orders ... serve them in a timely manner ... remember their names, if they are repeat customers. But even doing your best doesn't guarantee good tips ... some people just don't tip well (seems to be those who can most afford to tip well, don't).
