Yes and no. Sit ups help cut belly fat and gain some 6-packs, but it doesn't really makes you really skinny if that's what you mean.

it helps burn fat and tone your abdominal muscles but adding a healthy diet helps as well

Not just sit ups. Do some other exercises to like push ups, pull ups snd crunches
any exercise helps, but a variety is always best.
