i have a tooth that broke off in my gum. will the root get infected? i cannot afford to go to a dentist.

You must get this fixed as soon as possible. With the root/nerves exposed, the tooth is susceptible to infection, decay and more damage. Your gums may also become infected. You cannot afford to let this get worse, it will cost much more in the end.

You may save some money by having the work done at a Dentistry college.

Could. Start to rot from break, down to root. Enamel is gone.

At some point, it absolutely will get infected if you leave it as it is. I'm speaking from experience, from not only myself, but with my husband as well. You can contact a college, as they are typically less expensive. Or you can contact a dentists office, and ask them how much it would cost to have it removed. Just so you know, having it broke off at the gum line or below can be considered a 'surgical' procedure. It's important, the last thing you want is to let it go, and possibly face not only an infection in the 'tooth', but a blood infection as well. Yes, it can cost a lot of money to get it taken care of, but in the future, it could cost you a heck of a lot more. Don't let it go.
