2) If x-y=7 and xy=9, find the value of (x^2+y^2)

x+y=12. Xy=14. Square the 1st:
x^2+2xy+y^2=144. That's too much, so subtract 2xy from both sides. Well xy=14, so subtract 2xy=28. That leaves x^2+y^2=144-28.
