Is this a good reason to get angry at your child (or do i need patience)

we were in the grocery store and we were buying a birthday cake
we were walking around and was about to start touching the cake.

i screamed noooo. and yelled at him briefly how he better listen to me about not touching the cake and asked him did he understand me.

was this too much? do i need more patience?

First time I say it nice, but stern. Second time, not so nice. Third time all hell breaks loose.

I think that sometimes a little patience would work but sometimes it doesn't.

Screaming for that..yeah. Just say no one would do that to his cake and always be polite.

Plus to eat his veggies.

I think the screaming part was a bit much but the rest was ok.

i just said nooooo

But in the details of your question you said you screamed.

Yeah maybe a little much. If my son were to do something like that I would just calmly say 'Jacob, please don't touch the cake', and then he wouldn't..

Yelling may have been a little rash, but just giving a warning would have been enough...

Well no, in that case, it sounds very fair...

Yes, you went overboard. If you yell for every little thing a) child will stop taking you seriously and just tolerate or fear you b) what will you do when something actually serious happens?

I've seen the prices on store-bought cakes.... do you think that may have been a factor?

First you tell him then if he disobeys you get a little more forceful.

I think that's okay. I work in a grocery store and I see kids damaging products all of the time. I don't mind it, but when the parent sees what they are doing and doesn't take any action, that's what ticks me off. Kids need guidance and it's not gonna work when parents sweet talk everything they do.

I think that you should have had more patience. But at the same time I get it, kids can be hard! Haha I'm not a mum but I babysit, and they can be stressful. Was it the first time he had tried touching the cake? But in one of your comments you said he was 7? I think that he is old enough to know not to touch the cake

yes u did over do it but u dont want to feel tht way always other wise if he does do something wrong u cant really stop him because he thinks u arent going to be strict. but as a child and adults u both need to understand each others boundaries and child/parental limits.

I don't think you overreacted. If you tell them nicely the first time they will just do it again.

When my kids were young, I said" 1 2 3 listen to me in a normal tone .

How old is your child? That's a big factor in deciding how to deal with this.

well, you didn't have to yell at him because the kid is well...a kid. and you probably got alot of looks from people in the store. but you could have just said "hey, can you please not touch that?" and if he/she keeps doing it...then take it up a notch.

Yes u dont need to freak out over that sort of thing just say dont touch the cake plz or just say it nicely then they will most likely listen just dont let your child take advantage of u

Patience is definitely required. It's also important that you make your expectations clear prior to getting onto a situation that you don't want to be in. (Training starts at home) you may want to refrain from punishing your child in public or around the child’s peers, thus saving the young one some embarrassment. Check out this article, http://download.jw.org/files/media_magazines/66/g_E_201110.pdf, it has some great tips.
