Can I use another product to create my own and then sell it? What are the rules about this?

I want to take another product and artistically revamp the cover on it and then sell it, but I'm not sure if I can do that. I'm going to buy the product, so it would be mine, but I'm just not sure how this goes. Do I need permission from the people I'm buying the product from? Do I have to pay a fee to use their product in my creation? I can use all the advice I can get. I'm a little bit confused on how this works. Thanks in advance for all your help.

If you're only doing it on one item, you should be fine. If you're going to mass produce it, you will be sued by the original manufacturer. They have all of the rights to it. Buying it makes it yours for your personal use, and you can resell used property, but you can't by something, alter it, and resell for profit. You have to choices. You can submit your idea to the maker and hope to get paid or you can talk to a business lawyer for advice.
