I'd say religion is just a way to try and make sense of a confusing world. Going back to mediaeval times, the upper classes did use it to control the lower class, but all people in developed countries have equal rights now.
I don't think so. It's something that people have to make sense of things. I mean I can't imagine not having something to explain how everything came to be and what it's ultimate end will be. It gives people hope and a purpose. It gives us community. Also, I think that the universe is so perfectly organized that there must have been an intelligent, all powerful being that made it. There must be someone who rules it. I find it hard to belive that once there was nothing then there was a big explosion then there was something. There must be a better explanation. People made religion because they saw something or experienced that lead them to believe that such powerful beings do exist.
No. It should be a practice to enlighten and give a higher meaning to existence. A source or introspection. How does fundamental Islam or any extremist view control society? Seems to me it is tearing it apart.
It was used to control people yes, just as it does today so it was a successful concept. Installing fear if you do not behave as instructed with the idea of wrath from a supreme being, with promises of everlasting life and miracles if you did has proved to be a simple affective idea. In fact theres no way it couldnt be its very much like the power parents hold over their children with very similar consequences or the consequences of religious belief as installed in them, the idea has become in that affect similar to a virus of the mind controlling its host. It really is a simple childlike effective concept.
Of course people in that era had no knowledge of anything outside of themselves so of course they being rulers or competing for status had to have answers a supreme being wasnt a new idea the eygptians worshipped different gods. However the religions of today chose a god in a mans image as an appeal since human beings have such small ego's, angels are basically men with wings, again an attractive concept maybe thats why it has outlived other cults.
Religion wants every one to believe the same, act the same, live the same, exactly as it's written, with no thoughts of their own, and no doubts about their supernatural leader. You know, like North Korea.
To control society No,The Christian bible was not left to control us,but to save us and tells us the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. The bible tells us about Adam and Eve bringing original sin into the world and how all mankind will now die in there sins. God knowing that we all sin so he created a way to save us from eternal death from sin through his only son Jesus Christ, he came to pay the price so that our sins could be forgiving and we could have eternal life in heaven.
