They have many things in common. The main difference is that "vertebrates" have a vertebral column while invertebrates do not. A vertebrate has 3 distinguishing features at some point in its life: 1. A vertebral column 2. pharyngeal slits and 3. a post-anal tail. As humans we have a post-anal tail but lose it in development. Invertebrates are just as advanced as vertebrates i.e. the octopus.
