Who celebrates Columbus Day? I know it's a federal holiday and all, but really does anyone even acknowledge it as more than a day off work (for some)?
It's a day that barely gets a glance, but I agree he shouldn't even get a holiday to begin with. Most people aren't very interested in Columbus, so the "legend" continues. His story is like Paul Revere's, except as a person Columbus was much less savory.
the current move to discredit Columbus is based on our current culture and beliefs. which are better thankfully. however, most of the horrible things Columbus did were considered relatively normal at the time at least for those in authority.

I'm not certain that it is really historically accurate or fair to lay all of the ensuing problems in this country in the lap of an Italian explorer who landed in the Bahamas in 1492. Long after Columbus was dead and gone and this country had been explored and colonized by the Spanish, French, Dutch , English, etc.did those problems you cite appear. Slavery actually originated centuries prior to Columbus; it was never exclusively an American entity. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it appears to me that you are painting the situation with an extremely broad brush !
Columbus didn't start slavery nor did he kill any Indians as far as we know. Slavery was going on in Africa long before. Actually, slavery is promoted in the bible as "slaves should obey their masters." It is an ancient tradition. All the guy did was claim the land for Spain and brought a few Indians back to show the Queen. Never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined how things were going to change. All of this is explained in full detail at a college level history course. It is unfair to accuse Columbus of genocide. It is fair to accuse specific people or policies to be racially or purely economically motivated.
From reading the responses, I am sure you can tell the difference between those that received a college education and those that gave up after high school (or during).
