Why do Christian believers not accept homosexuality?

when by Christian law it says to love one another, its the only law pertaining to the Christian faith. If you love someone you do not murder, you do no hatred, nor entertain lustful thoughts about someone else if truly loving, if we worship God we will not worship someone or something in his place, that's it. Love one another. There is nothing in Christianity that says homosexuality is a sin, homosexuals are people and love one another too just like a heterosexual couple. its states we are not under the nation of Israel so we do not follow the old ways

Where in Kathy's question does it imply anything about atheism ?

She is an atheists. I've spoken with her before. Sorry if you don't understand my answer. Christians are lumped into one category. You don't like it, either do we. I'm not against gays!

Actually im am not an athiest i may make an arguement to spport and athiests viewpoint just as if a believer makes a valid arguement or gives some helpful insight i will do the same. Whos lumping who here? However i apologise for any offense my question has caused it was not my intent

Yes, because that makes so much sense.

If you go to the post "how do you think life would be without religion" there is a question i asked of athiests there today, under Shinyplates post. It has not been answered probably because the posts come up so fast here. I went to the library today hence i could post. I tried to post that topic as a main topic but it has been removed because its the same as the one posted. Im gonna see if i can reword it and post it again because i am interested in the answer. Learning something even how a question makes you feel says alot. Im aware of that but for me it is that stuff that brings growth. Questions often bring about understanding, thats why i post no post is the same a classification may appear but the concept is different.

True Christians do love everyone. I know I do. But in the Bible homosexuality was a sin in the eyes of God and he destroyed the homosexuals. The way I see it is that even if it is a sin, it's no different than any other sin like lying and gluttonously. People say "God hates fags." Well that's not true. Go hates sin, not his children.

actually true Christianity only promotes love, your belief in the old testament rules do not apply, it is not classes as a sin, not in Christianity.

There's nothing wrong with the old testament. If you are not forgiven by God you're burning in hell. Simple as that.

@Theaudrey: I happen to agree with you that the God of the Bible hates homosexuals. Some say this allegedly unchanging deity changed his mind and no longer hates homosexuals. But anyone who requires that his creation execute people of a certain sexual orientation and who harm no one, can only be seen as nothing other than a hater of homosexuals.

And while Jesus did not entirely dismantle Mosaic Law in that he reiterated some of those laws and modified some others, he tacitly approves of killing homosexuals by remaining silent regarding that law. Fortunately, Christians have become politically correct enough to not push for executing homosexuals by legal fiat. They only want to deny them the right to marriage. I guess that's their idea of a fair trade-off.
Report as
Well I believe God hates homosexuality, not homosexuals. Because we all lie at some point, but God doesn't hate us, he hates lying. Under every sinner is his child and he loves all of his children, and his children's sin is part of them.
Report as
So if God happened to say, "I hate heterosexuality, but not heterosexuals", or "I hate right-handedness, but not right-handed people", and knowing you could not be any other way, you wouldn't take it personally?
Report as
Well what God said goes...
Report as
And remember, God didn't have homosexuality executed. He had homosexuals killed. It is hard to separate hating the sin from the sinner when it is the sinner being killed.
Report as
You're right, it is hard. That's why it's God's job, not yours.
Report as
I do not support homosexuals or "bisexuals" and obviously you don't either. You and I can judge until the day we die but our opinion will never matter. God is the only one who had the right to judge those people and there is nothing we could ever do to change that.

@Theaudrey: Just for the record I am an atheist who for about the first half of my 64 years was a devout adherent to the God of Abraham. My comments are made regarding my readings and research regarding biblical scripture -- which now reflect my understanding since leaving that faith. In fact, I have been an active gay rights supporter for about 10 years and have witnessed the gross injustices heaped upon homosexuals by True Believers. All I have been doing is stating what the Bible says -- not what I believe.

First, it is SOME, not all. Please people, stop making such huge generalizations.

The idea initially comes from the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities that were destroyed by God for their sinfulness. It doesn't come out and say they were "gay" or "homosexual" but it's generally interpreted that that was the case.

Actually, a large number of modern Biblical scholars are of the expert opinion, based on source translations, that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was inhospitality rather than sexual deviancy. But the story has been linked with sexual deviancy for so long that it has been considered absolute truth. The real question is if Sodom and Gomorrah even existed, or if that story in Genesis is allegorical.

By your logic, if a brother and a sister love each other, they should be allowed to have sexual relations.

Your argument is specious.

The love the OP is talking about is the love of human kindness rather than carnal love. Homosexuals should be extended human kindness simply because they are fellow humans, just as the same should be done between siblings.

I used to be of the opinion that the New Testament changed how God wanted people to behave toward homosexuals, but not after giving it a lot of thought.

Some say this allegedly unchanging deity changed his mind and no longer hates homosexuals. But anyone who requires that his creation execute people of a certain sexual orientation and who harm no one, can only be seen as nothing other than a hater of homosexuals. Perhaps it is the sin God says he hates rather than the sinner, but that distinction was lost on the real, flesh-and-blood people who were killed by way of God's Law.

In the New Testament, Jesus did not entirely dismantle Mosaic Law in that he reiterated some of those laws, modified some others, and tacitly approves of executing homosexuals by remaining silent regarding that law. Fortunately, Christians have become politically correct enough to not push for executing homosexuals by legal fiat. They only want to deny them the right to marriage. I guess that's their idea of a fair trade-off.

In uganda they are making it punishable by law, also the "promoting" of it. One girl who loved another was raped by a man in a village and not convicted as they considered it as an intervention to cure her. (humanity is often so far from humane). Documentary last nite Stephen Fry, dont know if you can get it in america
Report as
@Kathy: I haven't seen the documentary, but I am familiar with what's going on. For those who aren't, the aptly named "Anti-Homosexuality Act" in Uganda was the brainchild of the Christian organization ?The Family? among who's members are some prominent, conservative American politicians, missionaries in Uganda, and Ugandan president Museveni. "The Family" was responsible for spreading biblical teachings about how God felt about homosexuals, and subsequent to that, the Ugandan government proposed this punitive law in Uganda.

While The Family says they never suggested that homosexuals be executed, nevertheless the government has run with their suggestions and embellished them. Now The Family organization is back-pedaling as fast as they can to avoid a PR nightmare. While the capital punishment part of the law is still being discussed (as far as I can tell), other extreme punitive measures, like those you mentioned and others, have been adopted into law.

This is what happens when religion is mixed with government. James Madison foresaw this happening as far back as 1822 when he warned in a letter to Edward Livingston of the corrupting influence of one on the other.

Do you view it as a choice then ratber than a predispostion,.if you do why do you think someone would make such a choice that targets them with so much prejudice and hate?
Report as
It's a choice because love in general is a choice you choose to love people or not to
Report as
Thy choose it because they are deceived to believe that it isn't wrong, so they think that everyone who tells them it's wrong are just hateful.

Loving someone does not nean we have to accept the unacceptable choices they make in life. We may love an alcoholic father but we dont love or accept his drinking or tantrums. We may love an adultrous mother but not love or accept the fact shes stepping out on dad. We may love a drug addicted sibling or child but not love or accept their drug abuse. And yes we are to love people who choose to have sexual relations with people of the same gender but we are under no command or obligation to love or accept their sexual choices and behavior. God loves all people but that doesnt mean He accepts their choices and their behaviors as right or good. Same for His followers. We are to love gay people and welcome them into our churches and minister to them, but we are not obligated to condone or love the sin in their lives any more than they are required to love the sun in our lives.
And there is plenty in christianity that shows God is absolutely against sexual relations between people of the same gender. It may not have been calked 'homosexuality' in those days but the act was pretty much a social norm inside and outside of religion. God banned sexual acts between people of the same gender and reiterated it in the New Testament under the new covenant under Christ. Sex with someone of the same gender is against Gods wishes and therefore a sin.

Actually i do not know that nor know why it would, but it does lead to understanding the viewpoints of others regardless as to wheather you agree. Why do you feel so much hate then? You feelings come from within you.

Homosexuality is a sin and an abomination before God;
God loves the sinner, but hates the sin.
It Is Written:
Leviticus 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind : it is abomination.
Leviticus 20:13
If a man also lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

Dear Kathy,
I actually think that fewer and fewer Christians now refuse to accept homosexuality...

As for the reason some of them do not, perhaps the answer is contained in this quote from Mahatma Gandhi (given by Ask's own Bubblious):

"I like your Christ.
I do not like your Christians, they are so unlike your Christ"

Not accepting homosexuality is a repudiation of Yeshua ben Joseph, the Christ... there is good research now and several fine books confirming that the GLBT communities contribute to society far beyond their numbers in literature, science, philosophy and the arts. They infuse a life-affirming, dynamic diversity into any culture.

Homophobia is an illness, just like any other phobia.
