Should I switch to Linux from Windows?

About 1 or 2 months ago, I got a cheap laptop. However, it is great for its price. In fact, amazing its price. I can play games on it without a ton of lag. The thing is, it runs Windows 8. I hate Windows 8. Windows XP was nice and simple, and the changes from Windows XP to Windows 7 were mainly visual. However, Windows 8 is just horrible. It tries to make a PC a tablet, when it's not a tablet. A PC IS A PC. So I've heard about Linux, but while Windows 8 sucks horribly, I'm worried about my files being changed around and the learning curve. Should I switch to Linux or stay on Windows 8?

If you're interested in playing games, I would at least consider keeping a Windows partition on your hard drive, and possibly downgrading to Windows 7 if you don't like how 8's interface is. Most PC games do not run in Linux because the operating system is so different and some of the game's files won't be read or even installed properly without a ton of modification or third-party package installations.

That said, there really isn't much of a learning curve to Linux, depending on the operating system you go with. I'm personally fond of Ubuntu and its variants (Kubuntu for the shiny OS lovers and Xubuntu for those who want lightweight systems), as well as Linux Mint.

Your best option would likely be to partition your hard drive, and dedicate one partition to Linux and one to Windows, at the very least to preserve your ability to play games that aren't based inside a web browser. The GUI is fairly straightforward and there are tonnes of helpful resources to help you with learning to navigate Linux operating systems :D

Thanks for the answer. If I can't play games on Linux that I play on Windows though, I'm sticking with Windows 8, even though I hate it. Thanks though.
